Vertex Energy (NASDAQ: VTNR) was the active stock gainer on Friday. The stock soared 96% to close $7.81. The specialty refiner sealed a $75 million deal to a refinery in Alabama from Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDSa).
Vertex expects the acquisition to add $3 billion in annual revenue and more than $400 million in gross profit by end-2023. The Mobile, Alabama, operation refines 90,000 barrels a day. Vertex plans to produce petroleum fuel and renewable diesel at the refinery following the close of the transaction, expected by December.
SemiLEDs Corporation (NASDAQ:LEDS) was another notable winner as the stock went up 44.86% to end the session at $13.82 after hitting a session high of $18.27. The stock saw a lower than average volume with more than 39.41 million shares traded for the session- compared to its average volume of 5.70 million shares.
SemiLEDs Corporation develops, manufactures, and sells light emitting diode (LED) chips, LED components, and LED modules and systems in the United States, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Ireland, and internationally. The company also sells enhanced vertical, LED product series in blue, white, green, and UV; LED chips to packagers or distributors; and lighting products primarily to original design manufacturers of lighting products and the end-users of lighting devices, as well as packages and sells its LED chips into LED components to distributors.
Organovo Holdings (NASDAQ:ONVO) surged 20.82% to $9.40 on Friday. Organovo Holdings, Inc. is an early-stage biotechnology company developing and utilizing highly customized 3D human tissues as dynamic models of health and diseased human biology for internal drug development.
Organovo is transitioning its short-term offering from a heavily service-based business in 2019 to drug candidate development, projecting multiple INDs by 2025.
